Emily packed her bags and took one last look at her small dorm room. It had been a long, exhausting semester, but she was finally going back home for winter break. She looked forward to spending quality time with her family and friends who she missed dearly. She couldn’t wait to catch up on all that she had missed while being away.

After loading her car with all her belongings, she began the long drive back home. The roads were quiet as everyone seemed to have left already for their holiday plans. Emily turned on the radio, hoping it would keep her company during the drive.

As she drove past small towns and countryside, Emily couldn’t help but feel a tinge of nostalgia in the crisp December air. Winter always reminded her of childhood memories spent snuggled up by a fireplace with hot cocoa in hand.

A Hitchhiking Musician

Suddenly, Emily noticed someone waving frantically by the side of the road ahead. As she drew closer, she realised it was young man holding his guitar case in one hand and thumbing for a ride with another.

Emily hesitated initially- picking up hitchhikers wasn’t something that came naturally to her - until he smiled through his curly hair and waved again cheerily from across his face mask. After taking a deep breath, Emily pulled over towards him.

“Hey”, he said casually as he hopped into the passenger seat next to hers.”Thanks so much! I’ve been waiting here for hours.”

“It’s no problem,” replied Emily politely before turning back towards the road ahead of them.

A Chance Encounter

The hitchhiker introduced himself as Jack- a musician travelling solo around different states performing gigs at small venues along his way.”I just finished my last gig nearby,” he said pointing towards his guitar which lay beside him.” And now I’m heading home.”

As they continued down the highway chatting, Emily relaxed and found it easy to talk with Jack. He was charismatic, friendly, and seemed to have a knack for drawing her out of her comfort zone.

Emily felt grateful that she had given him a lift. It was nice to share the long drive back home with someone else after all.

Emily is excited to reunite with her loved ones

Emily had been looking forward to the winter break ever since the semester began. The thought of finally being able to go back home and spend time with her family and friends made her giddy with excitement. She longed for those cozy nights by the fireplace, hot cocoa in hand, catching up on all that she missed.

So when the day finally arrived, Emily eagerly packed up her car and hit the road. As she drove down the familiar streets that led out of town, a sense of comfort washed over her. She hummed along to her favorite songs on the radio and couldn’t help but smile at how good it felt to be going home.

"I’m actually touring around playing my music,” he said with a grin that lit up his face. “I’m Jack.”

The Hitchhiker

Emily glanced at the stranger standing on the side of the road, his thumb outstretched. She knew she shouldn’t pick up hitchhikers, but something about him drew her in. He had a battered guitar case slung over his shoulder and a wistful look in his eyes.

She pulled over to the side of the road and rolled down her window. “Where are you headed?” she asked hesitantly.

“Anywhere that’s not here,” he said with a crooked grin.

Emily studied him for a moment longer before unlocking the doors. “Get in.”

The man introduced himself as Jack and thanked Emily for picking him up. She could feel his eyes on her as they drove, but it wasn’t an uncomfortable feeling; if anything, it was exhilarating.

“So what brings you out here?” Emily asked after several minutes of silence.

Jack sighed deeply before responding. “Just trying to make my way in this world, I guess,” he said vaguely.

“You know, I’m actually a musician,” he said with hesitation tingeing his voice as if worried Emily would judge him or find it uninteresting.

“Oh really? That’s cool! What kind of music do you play?”

“I write my own songs mostly…folk music I suppose,” he replied with a shy smile.

“That’s amazing! Can you play me one?”

Without any further thought, Jack started playing one of his original songs on his guitar which left Emily mesmerized and completely taken aback by how talented this stranger was sitting beside her whose existence only became known to her today.

They spent rest of their journey talking about everything under sun, from music to travel, dreams and ambitions. Emily found herself opening up to him more than she ever had with anyone else. It felt as if they had known each other for years.

As the sun began to set, Emily realized that they were approaching her hometown. She was torn between wanting to continue the journey with Jack and not being late on her family’s dinner plans.

“Thanks again for the ride,” Jack said as he gathered his things and stepped out of her car.

"I mean…like an assistant,” Jack clarified with a shrug.

An assistant? Emily thought incredulously. Was he seriously suggesting that she join him on tour as his personal helper?

As if reading her mind, Jack quickly added: “Of course I’d pay you and everything - plus you’d get to see all sorts of cool places along the way!”

For a moment, Emily felt torn between two paths: should she stay true to her original plans and head home for winter break? Or should she take a leap of faith and embark on this wild journey with this stranger named Jack?

The decision wasn’t an easy one - but deep down inside, Emily knew what she really wanted deep down inside.

On The Road

Parting Ways

After packing up all their gear and saying goodbye to everyone they met on tour, Jack and Emily stepped outside into the cool autumn air. They both held onto each other’s hands tightly as they walked down the street towards their separate cars.

”This is it,” Jack said, looking at her wistfully.
